The Anson Jones Award

Annually, the Fort Worth Scottish Rite Foundation, Inc, recognizes a top community leader and awards one of its scholarships in the name of this honoree. The award is named for Anson Jones, who was the first Grand Master of Masons of Texas and the fourth and last president of the Republic of Texas.

The Fort Worth Scottish Rite Foundation, Inc. created its Anson Jones Award to honor community leaders who were active in the community and have demonstrated great social awareness. An individual who stands as a role model to the community and to the younger generation evolving into the leaders of tomorrow.

The Foundation chose Anson Jones (1798-1858) because of his extensive record of community leadership and service. He was a doctor, a businessman, the judge advocate and surgeon in the Army of the Republic of Texas. He also served as a Representative, a Senator, the Minister to the United States, President pro tempore of the Senate, and Secretary of State of the Republic of Texas.

While serving as a Representative of the Second Congress of the Texas Republic, he helped enact legislation regulating the practice of medicine and advocating a uniform system of education and an endowment for a university. As the Republic of Texas' Minister to the United States, Jones advocated recognition and trade with the countries of Europe to encourage annexation of Texas by the United States. These and later efforts led to Jones being recognized as the "Architect of Annexation."

The Fort Worth Scottish Rite Foundation could think of no more fitting individual to identify with the qualities the community needs to promote the virtues of its mission statement "Brotherly Love, Tolerance, Charity and Truth".
